Our Camden town Balboa series are back, and with a brand new SLOW BALBOA course!

Monday nights beginning from 17th March through 14th April:

  • 7:30 PM - Slow Balboa
  • 8:30 PM - Balboa and Bal-Swing Intermediate

We think of these series as cumulative, with the level of difficulty increasing towards the end of both tracks. To get the most out of them we recommend taking either as a course. It is still possible to book individual classes.

As already mentioned, this block is different from the previous ones. Even though the Slow Balboa track will be covering the essential fundamentals, we do not recommend these classes to a complete beginner. Please read the description below for details.

SLOW BALBOA

Starting with the fundamentals of Slow Balboa, we will teach some core mechanics and classic steps of the dance through the duration of the course. Be prepared to focus on the precision of weight shifts, leading and following alike, and clarity of rhythm for both partners.

Who is it for?

  • If you’ve learnt some Slow Bal already, the course will help you to consolidate your skills, work on technique in detail and grow confidence in dancing Bal to slow tempoes.
  • The course can be a good intro for those dancers new to Slow Bal who can already lead or follow their fast Balboa in closed position with consistency, or for fast learners/advanced dancers with relatable dance background (Blues dancers, for instance).

Other requirements:

Connection. This course is for dancers that are comfortable with the idea of being chest-to-chest with their partner.

While dancing socially we welcome any kind of connection that doesn’t cause discomfort, for this course we would like to stay true to Balboa in its original form. Things we will teach require body-to-body contact, so we will assume you’re Ok with it if you are in this class.

Shoes. Please wear slippery shoes. Leather or suede soles are ideal.

BALBOA AND BAL-SWING INTERMEDIATE

This block’s themes:

  • smooth transitions between closed position and open (no more chest bumping or stopping, yay!)
  • using stretch and momentum to make everything flow.

Requirements:

We expect you to know these steps and to be able to dance them socially to a variety of tempos:

  • Pure Bal: up-hold and down-hold basics, as well as ad-lib steps including paddle steps/turns;
  • Bal-Swing: lollies and out-and-ins, throw-outs/toss-outs, swivel steps;

Please wear slippery shoes. Leather or suede soles are ideal.
